Overwhelmed By Social Media? Don’t Be

The last slide in my presentation Effective Social Media Promotion & Marketing To Drive Gym Traffic (the link will get you the content) delivered at the 2012 Gold’s Gym convention included the bugs bunny picture above. I reminded people of the tortoise and the hare fable. You know the story: the tortoise beats the faster hare because he keeps plodding along with purpose ! That is a good approach when jumping into Social Media for your gym or fitness brand.

Providing fitness center brands advice on social media is hard because many people don’t understand it; they often fear it; and more than anything they get overwhelmed by social media. When I share that I personally interact on over 10 networks I can just see the look of horror on some people’s faces . Many fitness brands and gym owners just don’t get started because of this uncertainty.

Look, when you try to recruit new members to your gym who’ve never exercised, you don’t scare them into thinking they have to kill themselves 2 hours on the first day or complete a marathon at the end of the first month. As a gym owner, you tell your clients to seek advice from a professional, have a game plan, start off slowly and be consistent. Well the same applies when it comes to social media. As your customers become more and more “connected” via mobile and social networks, they are looking to be served and interacted with via these platforms.
