Personal training was just starting to emerge in the mid 1990’s as a viable options for many health club members. Over the past 20 years training options have expanded to include a variety of formats, with group fitness, suspension training, and small group training becoming increasingly popular for members.
In the past several years small group training has become an more relevant opportunity for clubs to grow their non dues revenues, resulting in new business model opportunities. Small group is a great alternative for members whose number one objection to one on one personal training is cost. While the perception is that small group options can take away from traditional training revenues, the reality is that done properly small group can grow the overall revenue pie for everyone while increasing retention and member satisfaction.
Recent offerings like the Les Mills GRIT series, which combines high intensity training with a small group format, will enable clubs to reliably deliver quality small group offerings. New technology platforms, including those provided by ABC Financial, will allow easier monetization and management of small group training. A variety of kiosk and smartphone tools will provide convenient solutions that enable pay per seat and easier booking and billing options for members and club operators.
Small group training is a fantastic opportunity for fitness facilities. By combining the right programming with thoughtful technology more members can be served in an increasingly effective way.
